My symptoms of an unknown sickness started in early September of 2020 during my junior year of college. It was not certain at the time what were causing these health issues; however, the ailments were having a large effect on my living standards. Severe pain and constant trips to the bathroom plagued me for sometime before ending up in the hospital for two weeks where the doctors tried everything to calm the terrible symptoms. After going through extreme tests while in the hospital, I was finally diagnosed with Ulcerative Colitis. Ulcerative Colitis is a reoccurring auto-immune condition that causes ulcers in the lining of the colon due to an attack from ones own immune-system. Doctors described that there was no way to manage the disease with diet and that extremely powerful medicines or a full colectomy was the only way to ever live a normal life again. There is no known cure to this disease, only ways to manage the symptoms and put it into remission for as long as possible. After hundreds of hours of research about the disease, the one common factor that arose was the gut microbiome. For three years I have crafted an eating pattern that alters the biome into a symbiotic state allowing a symptom free life without any medicine. Although I have not gotten to the point of being cured, I truly believe this is the most natural way to manage auto-immune diseases. Through this personal experience, Shaka Health aims to help others with auto-immune disease Hang Loose and Live Healthy!
The current eating pattern that I have been following has yielded the best results so far in my journey with naturally managing my auto-immune disease. Increasing the intake of organic grass-fed beef from local farms has increased my protein intake dramatically compared to plant based leading to the return of muscle. A large amount of fiber and fermented foods with meat promotes a better environment in the gut microbiome while increasing muscle mass.

Picture a bustling city on a weekday morning, the sidewalks flooded with people rushing to get to work or to appointments. Now imagine this at a microscopic level and you have an idea of what the microbiome looks like inside our bodies, consisting of trillions of microorganisms (also called microbiota or microbes) of thousands of different species. [1] These include not only bacteria but fungi, parasites, and viruses. In a healthy person, these “bugs” coexist peacefully, with the largest numbers found in the small and large intestines but also throughout the body. The microbiome is even labeled a supporting organ because it plays so many key roles in promoting the smooth daily operations of the human body. The gut microbiome is not only important for patients suffering from an Auto-Immune disease, but for all individuals trying to better their health. Gut health has a drastic effect on overall health stemming from disease management to mental illness prevention.
